Pyrolysis Laboratory Operations – Data verification

Technotherm has empirical data available for many carbonaceous materials that allows for the determination of the volume and quality of gas, condensables and residues produced in Technotherm Phase Pyrolysis facilities.

Armed with this data we can formalise Mass and Energy Flow diagrams for site specific application and calculate the outputs from the facility.

Following the above we can provide the plant value, opex and layout details for the client / project developer who can thence review the ROI / Project viability.

In some instances, the end client or the finance provider requires that the original data is verified.

The Technotherm Laboratory, Testing and Demonstration plants have been developed to fulfil this task.

Requirement to complete verification of the base data:

Determine from sample provided:

Moisture content

Mass of Gas

Constituents of gas and energy content

Condensibles

Approximate constituents of above

Residue content

% energy remaining in residue

This data is then used within the Mass and Energy Flow Diagram to access any variations in the result previously obtained using the empirical data.

It is of great importance that the sample provided is representative of that that will be presented to the final pyrolysis facility.

Alternative 1

Complete a Batch Pyrolysis test

Sample to be provided 1kg

Laboratory time 6 hours

External services – gas analysis

Lab manager for test data and final report

Engineering for re visit of mass and energy flow diagram and report analysis / conclusions

Alternative 2

Complete a Continuous Pyrolysis test

Sample to be provided 20kg

Laboratory time 14 hours

External services – gas analysis

Lab manager for test data and final report

Engineering for re visit of mass and energy flow diagram and report analysis / conclusions

Alternative 3

Complete a Continuous Operational Run in a Commercial Pyrolysis Plant

Sample to be provided depending upon material 100 to 1000kg – to be confirmed

Facility interruption period 2 days

External services – gas analysis

Lab equipment temporarily installed for data capture and Lab staff to supplement operational staff

Engineering for re-visit of mass and energy flow diagram and final report compilation analysis / conclusions.

For the disseminate to decide upon the option that is most viable we would advise:

The batch test is operated from cold to operational conditions and thus the result when compared with continuous may be relied upon to 90% of what the final continuous result would be.

The continuous lab test will be entirely representative of what will be evident in the finally installed plant, although an improvement in capacity may be expected on a larger plant.

The use of the industrial unit would be entirely representative of the final outcome of an installed facility. This may be required by an investor in order that the “upside” in the project development business plan may be considered.

LABORATORY FACILITY

We are Proud and fortunate enough to have built our own Laboratory testing facility based in Pendale Randvaal.

Equipped with both a continuous and batch testing Phase Pyrolysis Units, we are able to process any feedstock, on a minimal quantity basis, allowing our specialist team to analyse condensibles, residues and gas produced throughout the pyrolisation process. Furthermore condensibles are distilled and an analysis of gas, samples taken throughout the pyrolysis process, is conducted allowing identification of gas constituents.

The facility is complete with gas clean up and collection system, thus Technotherm can process potential clients materials and determine the operational conclusions for use within Mass and Energy Flow diagrams thus determining yield and capex.

The unit is designed to operate on a continuous basis to determine Gas quantity, condensable, quality of each output, % moisture and residue of any input material.

CALORIFIC RESULTS

In order to reduce on site installation time to a minimum and provide shortest overall delivery times it is our policy to pre-assemble to the maximum and as far as practical process using clients materials prior to dispatch. this allows for optimisation and improvements in line with our overall company philosophy.

illustration is unit prior to commercialisation phase 1 being the pyrolysis unit (Plastics to Diesel) and to be shortly followed by the refinery section commissioning.

The unit was originally designed for processing X ray film and PC Boards, although is capable of operating on all waste materials.

The facility is complete with gas clean up and engine, thus Technotherm can process potential clients materials and demonstrate the swallowing of the waste liability and conversion to an energy asset.
